In 1990, the Congo renounced Marxism. A multiparty constitution was introduced, and legislative and presidential elections were held in 1992. Parties were deadlocked and, in June 1993, President Lissouba called new elections. The results were disputed, but Lissouba's UPADS party won rerun elections.
